Jennifer Chuks

My name is Jennifer and I have been progressing and increasing the frequency of writing articles and blogging to build a full time career as a writer.

My interests are reading fiction, film and fashion. My professional career began as a merchandiser and fashion stylist so naturally I had the opportunity to write fashion articles. I have also written for blogs, online articles and for a movie review site in recent years whilst completing a Comprehensive Writing Course with The Writers Bureau.

Backstreet Boys: Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of (15) Film Review

Hold your breath, put on that sparkly skirt which you adored in the 90s and go see one of the highest grossing boy bands of the past 20 years: The Backstreet Boys. Making a movie of their 20 year reunion was initially prompted by Nick, the baby of the group for you non-fans. Documenting their first concert in eight years, the film sees them back as the five-piece vocal group. It’s a throwback of a different kind and only to be endured if you are a fan, because the fact that at least Kevin can e

Cake (15) Film Review

If you have loved and lost. If you suffer from an affliction. If you have or have had an addiction. If you are in agony. If a spouse, sibling or child whom no matter how much you love them bring you pain in your life. Cake opens up the fact that you are allowed to acknowledge it. This film speaks about a taboo that goes beyond the realm of Grumpy Old Men or My Sister’s Keeper. Anyone can identify with this, except of course if your bitterness exceeds that of Claire Bennet (Jennifer Aniston), you

The Duke of Burgundy (18) Film Review

With The Duke of Burgundy, crime and punishment take on a whole new meaning. This movie is mesmerising, revolving around the relationship of Cynthia and Evelyn, a partnership of that’s exceptionally unconventional at every level. The film shows Cynthia (Sidse Babett Knudsen) struggling to please and maintain her partner Evelyn (Monica Swinn). Cynthia finds herself at a point where she struggles to find the answer to the question: is she compromising herself for the woman she loves? The torment i

The Philadelphia Story (R/I) (U) Film Review

The trials and tribulations of arranging a wedding for a second marriage are hard enough, but when rich, headstrong Tracy Lord has to battle off her ex-husband and his team of reporters set on invading the big day, in a short space of time her self-acknowledgement becomes her saviour. Set in 1940, Philadelphia USA, where the accents are broad and the fashion debonair, this movie has all the charm and sophistication you’d expect from a George Cukor picture with Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant as

Pelo Malo (15) Film Review

This heart-wrenching story of a nine year old boy living in the slums of Venezuela exemplifies the struggles a hard working mother and family can face. Junior (Lambrano) is a boy of mixed race descent; his black father died a suspicious death in his youth. Could the loss of his only father figure be the reason for all his “problems”? With his mother Marta and younger baby brother, he lives each day of his summer holidays bouncing from her odd jobs or from a nanny to the streets, while she attemp

The Green Ray (PG) Film Review

The 1986 classic The Green Ray is a typical French melodrama. Montana (15) Home Entertainment Review

Montana is a movie of two halves, London’s East End slang, grit and gangster culture meets Serbian war conflict of the past two decades. It is a juxtaposition of culture, time and ethics. Montana (David) is, believe it or not, the name of the 14 year old protagonist. This boy is orphaned and adopted into a life of drug peddling. However, he finds his feet when he is rescued from certain death by a stranger Dimitrije (Mikkelsen). Together they find that their strengths combined can overthrow thei

The Grandmaster (15) Film Review

Dir. Kar Wai Wong, China, 2013, 108 minutes in Mandarin and Cantonese with English subtitles The Grandmaster took six years to plan and three years to make and it’s a blockbuster of a kung fu movie. Visually it is stunning, shot in some of the most beautiful locations: the glacial picturesque backdrops of North China are a perfect complement to the beauty and elegance of the interior scenes. The accomplished cast breathe life into the characters and in regards to the martial arts and the traini

Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno (15) | Close-Up Film Review

If you don’t know about Rurouni Kenshin by now you’d better ask somebody. This explosive final instalment of the Rurouni Kenshin live action film series is a force to be reckoned with. Based on the manga series of the same name, not only has it earned $38.5 million USD in just 28 days since opening in Japan, but after its UK release on 28th November it could far surpass the adventure of any Marvel comic book movie adaptation. The wanderer most commonly known in the anime circuit as Hitokiri Bat

New Directors from Japan (15) Home Entertainment Review

Dir. Various, Japan, 2014, 170 mins, in Japanese with English subtitles Third Window Films presents this sampler of the best work by Japanese first-time directors. This fashion-fuelled, style-sampling cotton crazy movie has Japan written all over it. The eccentric, fashion conscious lead Kamono is dumped by his normal looking girlfriend and shunned by a fashion journalist. He meets a magazine representative who wants to make him a male model but soon finds out it is less Harajuku and more barg

There’s Something About Susan (E)

It is surprising that a documentary about one of the most successful singers in the world should focus on the shortcomings of a reality show finalist, but then this is a film about none other than Susan Boyle. This very sympathetic documentary covers the summer of 2013, showing the trials and tribulations of a somewhat colourful personality as she prepares for a first, sold out tour across her mother country of Scotland. Susan’s playful attitude and Scottish charm come across as endearing as th
